It's that time of year again! The leaves are changing color, the air is getting crisp, and everywhere you turn there's the intoxicating aroma of pumpkin spice. While pumpkin spice may be most associated with yummy fall treats like lattes and pies, the spices in this blend actually offer some surprising health benefits. Let's take a closer look at what makes pumpkin spice so good for you.
Pumpkin spice is made up of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. All of these spices have amazing health benefits!
Cinnamon: The most popular spice in the world, cinnamon has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, and improve brain function. Cinnamon’s high levels of antioxidants protect against oxidative stress slowing the signs of aging. Additionally, antioxidants support the immune system making it a great seasoning to include throughout cold and flu season.
Nutmeg: Nutmeg is full of important minerals like magnesium, potassium, and iron. It also contains compounds that can boost brain function and relieve pain.
Cloves: Cloves are full of antioxidants and have been shown to reduce inflammation, fight infections, and improve blood circulation. They’re also great at fighting cavities and numbing the pain of canker sores. In addition to all these amazing benefits, this superstar spice also has the ability to combat any parasitic bugs that may be lurking deep in our intestines.
Ginger: Ginger is well known for its ability to settle the stomach and relieve nausea. It is also full of antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds. Consumption of ginger has been shown to help protect against stomach ulcers and can even help to ease pain from menstrual cramps. Perhaps one of the most impressive benefits of this spice is its ability to block cancer cell growth (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30009484/.)
